Type 1 and 2 Writes
In class today, we discussed what the meaning of health is. We came up with five major components, which are mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual health. After coming up with these components we went outside to see how these components are a part of our everyday life.
Our first task was to get to a pole which was about 20ft away in 20 seconds. I ran to the pole, and by doing that it was physical health because it was making me in better shape. Along with physical health we went up to the athletic fields were athletes play there games and do a lot of physical activity.
When we walked up the hill in class we saw signs that were spray painted on. I decided that this could have been a social activity with friends, and that this act would be a factor in ones social health. Another factor to your social health is athletics because you are participating in athletics with friends.
Also when walking up the hill we saw a pack of cigarettes which some might thinks calms there nerves which would help out with there emotional health. Another benefactor to ones emotional health that we saw on our trip outside was athletics because some people put their heart and soul into athletics.
Finally, spiritual health would fall under choices. People make their choices sometimes based on their religious beliefs. With having good morals and being religious that could help someone make better choices.

Sexually Transmitted Infections:
1. Chlamydia-It is an infection caused by bacteria. You can get it by having sexual contact with another person who has the infection. Some symptoms for females may be pelvic pain, painful/frequent urination, vaginal discharge, bleeding after intercourse or there may not be any symptoms at all. Some symptoms for males may be painful urination, discharge from penis or there may not be any at all. The only way to know you have the infection for sure is to get a urine or discharge sample sent to a lab. It is treated with an antibiotic. If you don't take care of it then it may cause infections of the reproductive organs, infertility and you can spread it to other sex partners. You can also pass this from mother to infant during child birth.
2. Gonorrhea-It is an infection caused by bacteria and you can get it by having sexual contact with someone who has the infection. Some symptoms for females may be pelvic pain, painful urination, vaginal discharge, fever, blood/pus from anus, sore throat or they may be none.-Some symptoms for males may be painful urination, discharge from penis, blood/pus from anus, sore throat or there may be none. The only way to know for sure that you have this infection is to get a urine or discharge sample sent to a lab. This infection is treated with antibiotics. If you don't take care of this the it may cause PID or infertility, heart trouble, skin issues or arthritis, you can spread it to partners and a mother can pass it to her child during birth.
3. Syphilis-It's a bacterial infection. The only way to get it is to have sexual contact with someone who has it. Some symptoms during the early stages are painful sores on mouth, penis, vagina, anus, or elsewhere on the body. You can find out if you have it by getting a medical examination of the sores or a blood test.-It may be treated with antibiotics but may need hospitalization. If you don't treat this it may get to the second or even third stage. In the second stage things such as rashes, fevers, hair loss, body aches, sore throat, swollen glands or new sores may happen to you. If it gets as far as the third stage you can get heart damage, brain damage, can cause PID, severe damage to fetus and it may even go as far as death.
4. HIV/AIDS-It is a virus that damages the immune system which decreases the bodies ability to fight infections. You are able to get this infection by having sexual contact with someone who has it, blood to blood contact with someone who has it, sharing contaminated needles or breast milk.-Some symptoms are fever, chills drenching night sweats, weight loss, constant diarrhea, dry cough with shortness of breath, constant fatigue, swollen glands, pink or purple raised blotches on or under the skin, white spots in mouth or there may be no symptoms at all. You can know for sure by getting a blood test or an orasure test done.-Even though there is still no cure for this infection there's a mixture medications that can be taken to boost the immune system and fight the spread of infection and accompanying illnesses. If you don't get this treated you may develop some life threatening illnesses that can be passed from mother to child during birth, sex partners and needle sharing partners.
5. Genital Herpes-This is an infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus. You can get this infection by having sexual contact or skin to skin contact with someone who has it. This virus may be passed weather there are sores present or not. You may get painful blisters that will break into open sores and swollen glands. The sores will dry up and disappear within 5-21 days.-You should get a medical examination, fluid form sores sent to a lab or a blood test to know for sure.-The infection will never leave your body however there are medications or cream that you can use to speed up the healing process and prevent future outbreaks. The sores come and go with stress and/or illnesses, you can spread this to your sex partners, and can be passed from mother to child during birth which may cause sickness and maybe even death.
6. Genital Warts-This infection is cause by HPV .It can be passed by having sexual or skin to skin contact with someone who has HPV and it can be passes even if warts aren't visible.-Small painless bumps which grows in/around genitals, may have slight itching or irritation or there may not be any symptoms. To know for sure you should get either a medical exam or a pap test. Once you are infected it forever stays in your body, however you can get the warts burned, froze or cut off. May require surgery. It can be passed from mother to child during birth, can be passed to sex partners and the warts can grow, spread, and become harder to remove.
7. Pubic Lice/Crabs-It's a parasite that lives in the hair around genitals. It is mostly passed by sexual or skin to skin contact but can be passed through infested towels, clothing and/or bedding. Some symptoms may be severe itching, lice or eggs in pubic hair and small dots of blood ion panties. The only way to know for sure it to get a visual examination. It can be treated by using a special shampoo or lotion, wash all bedding and clothing, and have others who may also have it checked and treated. If you don't take care of this the symptoms can get worse, may lead to bacterial infection and can spread to others.

A world without cervical cancer:HPV Va cine
The Human Papavolna Virus (HPV) is an infection cause by having sex. Protection is one way that you can reduce getting this virus. It is believed that about 8% of our population has this disease. About 10,000 women in America have HPV, and about 4,000 die of it. A way to be tested for HPV is with that Pap Test which looks for abnormal cervical changes. There are currently no test for men because they don't have cervix.
The new vaccine out is called Gardasil. It helps prevent against 4 strains of HPV. Two in which stop genital warts and two that cause cervical cancer. Doctors want people to get this vaccine before they have sex, so they are targeting young women from the ages 9-26. The shot is given in a 6 month time frame and there are 3 shots. The vaccine is pricey and costs about $500. They hope eventually the government will make it so you must get the vaccine.
Sex Myths:
They went over 5 of the most commonly sex myths. The first was wearing 2 condoms is more effective. That in fact is a lie because it will break due to friction. The condom on the inside breaks after about 15 seconds and the second one breaks soon after. Even though there is no scientific proof it is not more effective. The second one was that you can't get pregnant when you have your period. That to is false. Women don't always have heavy blood flow and some are more sexually aroused. The sperm can stay inside the ovary up to 7 days which leave potential to become pregnant. The third one was people who have infections know that they have them. Once again that is false. You can't tell by just looking at someone. People don't always know they are infected because there are no symptoms. Fourthly was that men have more partners than women. That too is false. Actually, the two tend to have the same amount of sexual partners. Women tend to not tell the truth about how much they've had sex. Finally was that masturbation decides if you're gay or straight. That to is false. This comes from the idea if you like yourself that much then you like your sex better then the opposite sex. It is a very prejudice myth.
Birth Control:
They first talked about common sex questions. A women is most likely to get pregnant during ovulation which is right before the egg is released. The most effective form of birth control is abstinence and the least effective is the withdrawal method. The most effective birth control against becoming pregnant and STI's is the condom or abstinence. The only birth control that is effective after sex is the emergency contraceptive.
They then went to talk about 5 different birth controls. The first one was the female condom. This is new on the market, and is the same as a men's condom. It protects from pregnancy and STIs. Guys can also use it too in anal intercourse. The second one was the Nova Ring. This is impregnated with hormones that stop ovulation. Women keep it in for 3 weeks then take it out. The third one was the pill. Which also stops ovulation. You took pills for 3 weeks then take a week of sugar pills to remember to keep taking the pill. The fourth one was the Dental Dam. This form of birth control stops fluids from being passed. The last one was the condom, the most commonly used birth control. If the condom is expired don't use it, and if it has a hole don't use it.

We watched a movie on decision making. The inspirational speaker/comedian in the film was Michael Pretecharh. He discussed with teenagers the process of decision making and how to make the right ones. Michael first discussed how sometimes adults forget how hard it was to grow up, and that sometimes teenagers need to learn from their own mistakes. He believed there was three main components in decision making; Vision, Initiative, and perspective. Vision had to do with who you wanted to be. Initiative dealt with making good choices. Perspective was not getting caught up in all the bad things.
Michael strongly believed that if you had a good vision about yourself then you'd make good choices. At any point in ones life though you can change your vision about yourself for the better. Sometimes teenagers are afraid to say no even though they want to because they are afraid of how others will perceive them.
He also stressed the fact that it is okay to have problems, because everyone has them. It's not okay if you ignore your problems and don't try and fix them. People should never forget that laughing gets you through the hard times. People need to realize that there are consequences for the actions you take.

Tobacco
Nicotine
Nicotine is a naturally found drug in tobacco. When smoking, your body becomes physically and physcologically addicted to nicotine. If one wants to overcome smoking then you have to overcome both addictions.
Nicotine is a drug the is carried down to your lungs, then goes into your bloodstream. Nicotine effects you heart and blood vessels, hormonal system, metabolism, and the brain. Once nicotine has entered your body it will stay there for about 3-4 days.
People enjoy smoking because nicotine produces a pleasant feeling. Nicotine also acts a depressant which interferes with your nervous system sending information to the blood cells.
When you smoke a cigarette it reaches your brain faster than drugs that enter the body intravenously.
Nicotine Withdrawal
Withdrawal happens physically and mentally.
Your body reacts to the withdrawal.
Physcologically giving up the habit it hard because it is a change in your behavior.
Some of the withdrawals are dizziness, depression, feelings of frustration and anger, irritability, sleep disturbance, trouble concentrating, restlessness, head aches, tiredness, and an increase in appetite. These withdrawals make people start smoking again. Sometimes you can start up again as quickly as a few hours after you stopped.

Testicular & Cervical Cancer
The past few classes we have been discussing both testicular and cervial cancer. We have learned many important facts that will help us later on if life. I'm briefly going to share some of the facts that we disscussed.
Testicular cancer is very uncommon for men in the United States. Only 1-2% of men have testicular cancer, but it is unknown what causes it. In 2004, 74 men died of the cancer. Unlike many other cancers, testicular cancer is not more common the older you get. Most cases occur with males between the ages 25-45. There are two different germ cell tumors for testicular cancer. The first is seminomas and the second is teratomas. The symptoms of testicular cancer are swelling or lumps, and uncommon symptoms are pain and enlargement of the testicles. Men are responsible to check themselves for these lumps. Once diagnosed with testicular cancer there is treatment. In most cases it requires a surgery, but for some either radiotherapy or chemotherapy is used. If testicular cancer is caught early the treatment is 95% effective, and if caught late it is only 50% effective.
A very common cancer for women is cervical cancer, or also known as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). In the U.S. there is about 20 million cases of HPV, and there is over 100 different types of the cancer. In your life, 3 out of 4 people will have HPV at some point. Some cases go away within 8-13 months, and some that don't can hide for many years. High risk HPV which is when cell changes is linked to cervical cancer. Most women usaully recover from this cancer with no health problems. If a women has a damaged immune system they are at a higher risk to the cancer, and so aren't women who smoke. To reduce ones risk of getting the cancer they can, practice absitence, have only one partner, perform sex play with no intercourse, use condoms, and recieve the HPV vaccine. With the vaccine there are 3 shots. This shot protects you from 4 types. Two that protect you from genital warts, and two that protect from the cancer. If diagnosed with the cancer the cells infected will be removed. They can be removed by cryotheraphy which is when the cells are frozen off, laser when they are destroyed by the beam, and leep which is when the cell is removed by a thin wire. It is reccomended that women have annual pap tests.

Vitamin P or bioflavonoids are compounds found in ample amounts within plants. They serve in the defense and pigmentation of plants. Unlike many active plant compounds flavonoids have a low toxicity. Flavonoids are known for their anti-oxidant properties. And although have been called Vitamin P for ease, are not really vitamins.Flavonoids are helpful in the absorption of Vitamin C and are more potent when taken together. However flavonoids are absorbed poorly by the body, at only about 5% . Research has also shown that flavonoids are quickly metabolized by the body, as they are seen as foreign bodies. Therefore the newest belief is that the flavonoids do not act directly in the body, but that it is the bodies reaction against them that is beneficial, almost in the same way as a vaccination. Flavonoids can provide anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and anti-cancer services.Flavonoids are found in most plants but the white membrane below citrus peel, as well as peppers, grapes, red wine, onions, garlic, blue and red berries, green tea and buckwheat are specifically high in them. There is little problem with deficiencies, interactions or overdoses with a decent diet, as flavonoids are common within our foods. In extreme causes an overdose of flavonoids can cause diarrhea.

Vitamin K(Phytonadione):Vitamin K is a fat soluble substance that helps blood to clot. Clotting is the process where blood cells stick together like glue at the surface of a cut. It also helps the bones develop normal structure. The bacteria in the intestines can produce its own vitamin K, but you can also get it from green leaf vegetables and some vegetable oils, cheddar cheese and mayonnaise. Vitamin E inhabits how much vitamin K the body can absorb, something that can make a person bleed abnormal. Pregnant women should be careful about taking vitamin K, as it is excreted in to breast milk, and at crosses the placenta, so the baby will get it. If you don't get enough vitamin k, you will get impaired blood clotting. It is easier for infants to get deficiencies, because they might get it from their mother when being breast-fed, and breast milk is relatively low in vitamin K.There are no real consequences to overdose, toxicity or side effects of vitamin K.Aspirin, Cholestyramine and Mineral oil laxatives are medications that can interact with vitamin K.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine, pyridoxal phosphate)...Performs as a coenzyme (which is a small organic but non-protein molecule that carries a chemical group between enzymes) and affects the body’s use of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. It helps convert tryptophan (which is an essential amino acid that's involved in human nutrition) to niacin (which is most important to functions in the production of energy from the body’s blood sugar. It is also necessary to the production of fats in the human body. Niacin is also essential for correct functioning of the nervous system) It may be found in meat, fish, eggs, milk, and whole grain foods. This vitamin promotes healthy cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems. Supports healthy hair, skin and normal red-blood-cell development. Assists in the creation of food energy and possible anemia treatment. It functions as a tranquilizer, it's important for healthy nerve and muscle functioning, blood cholesterol may decrease, reduction of PMS symptoms, it may reduce asthma symptoms and increases levels of serotonin to ease sleep.Vitamin B6 may be found in Avocados, Bananas, Beef liver, Chicken, Fortified cereals, Ground beef, Ham, Hazelnuts, Potatoes, Salmon, Shrimp, Soybeans, Sunflower seeds, Tuna and Wheat germ Suggested amounts:-Men: 1.3 mg-Men (Over 50): 1.7 mg-Women: 1.3 mg-Women (Over 50): 1.5 mg-Pregnancy: 1.9 mg-Lactation: 2.0 mg

Thiamine, also called vitamin B1, is used in many different body functions. A very little amount of this vitamin is actually stored in the body. Thiamine is a very important vitamin, if somebody who is suffering from beriberi injects thiamine into there body, then they will be on their feet within a matter of hours. It also plays a role in helping circulation. It helps the blood formation and the metabolism of carbohydrates. It is also required for the health of the nervous system, and is used in the bio synthesis of a number of call constituents. Females should consume 1.0 mg per day, and males should consume 1.4 mg a day. Death in Thia min is very uncommon, although long-term amounts of larger than 3 grams have been known to cause toxicity. This vitamin should be taken with the B group vitamins and manganese. It is proven that thiamine can be useful for motion sickness in air and sea travel, and that this vitamin also repels insects when excreted through the skin.

Tomatoes...Eating tomatoes has many health benefits. They contain compounds that have been proven to help prevent cancer, heart disease, cataracts and much more. Tomatoes were never eaten in the U.S. until the early 1800's because they are considered part of the deadly nightshade family. The deadly nightshade family were considered toxic and caused many things like appendicitis, cancer and "brain fever". But now people know that they are safe to eat and may do just the opposite. They contain a large amount of vitamin C (40% of the daily value), 15% of daily value for vitamin A, 8% of potassium, 7% of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of iron for women and 10% RDA for men. The compound I talked about in the beginning appears to act as an antioxidant which neutralizing free radicals that may damage cells in the body. Harvard's studies have discovered that men who consume 10 servings of tomatoes a week (which is the equivalent to 10 slices of pizza) can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by 45%. Italian researchers discovered that those who consume more than 7 servings of raw tomatoes lower the risk of developing rectal, colon, or stomach cancers by 60%.

Zucchini...Zucchini is a type of squash that resembles a cucumber in size and shape made up of 95% water, and is a refreshing addition to a salad. Zucchini contains vitamin C and lutein, which is important for healthy eyes and seeing at night. Vitamin C helps heal cuts and scrapes faster and fights off sniffles and colds. One zucchini has 25 calories and became popular in the U.S. in the 1950's. They are available year round. They are also rich in fiber which helps the digestive system and prevents constipation.

Apples-Apple's are traditionally used in the treatment for weight loss, fingernails, bowel stimulator, arthritis, indigestion, gout, and many other things as well. Apple's are a very good source for chlorine, copper, iron, magnesium, sulfur, vitamin c, vitamin a, biotin, vitamin b-1, sodium, and pectin. The best kind of apple for you to juice with are one's that are hard and nice and firm. You should really try to avoid apple's that are bruised. Some people feel that you can juice with the seeds of an apple, and on the other hand some people also feel that you shouldn't juice your apple with the seeds. I feel that you should take out the seeds when you are juicing, because the seeds contain cyanide. The best kind of apples for you to buy would have to be the organic apple's. This type of apple does not have the wax that they put on some types. Apple's also offer a lot of amino acids.

Fruits
Kiya- fruit groupWhat is considered a fruit?any fruit, it can be canned, fresh, frozen, dried, whole, cut-up, or pureed. and still a fruit. How much fruit is needed daily? The amount of fruit you need to eat depends on age, sex, and level of physical activity. Recommended daily amounts are shown in the chart. Recommended amounts are shown in the table below.
Daily recommendation*
Children2-3 years old1 cup*
*4-8 years old1 to 1 ½ cups*
*Girls9-13 years old1 ½ cups**14-18 years old1 ½ cups*

**These amounts are appropriate for individuals who get less than 30 minutes per day of moderate physical activity, beyond normal daily activities. Those who are more physically active may be able to consume more while staying within calorie needs. Click here for more information about physical activity.http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/fruits_amount.aspx ( click the chart)http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/fruits.html
Cj- There are a few things that can count as a cup of fruit. I cup of fruit counts as a cup along with 1/2 cup of 100% fruit juice, or ½ cup of dries fruit. Some specifics are 1 banana, 16 seedless grapes, 1 orange or 16 melon balls of watermelon.
Fruits have a lot of health benefits. Having a diet rich in fruit can reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes, and some forms of cancer like mouth stomach or colon cancer. Because some fruits are rich in fiber eating them could reduce the risk of heart disease. Eating fruits can be part of a low calorie diet because fruits have low amounts of calories per cup compared with some other foods. Fruits also contain large amounts of nutrients. Many fruits are low in fats and none have cholesterol. Fruits are important sources of potassium as well as dietary fiber and vitamin c. Potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Potassium is found in bananas, prunes and pears. Fiber helps maintain or reduce blood pressure levels and can be found in most whole fruits. Vitamin C helps repair body tissue and heal wounds.
There are some easy tips for eating fruits. Keep in season fruits on the counter and in the refrigerator so you always have fruits on hand. Eat whole fruits and 100% fruit juice. At breakfast top your food with fresh fruit, pack a fruit with lunch, and have coleslaw or pineapple at dinner. Add dips or dressing to frits to make them more appealing or add applesauce instead of oils when baking a cake. Keep fruit safe by cleaning it before you eat it and keep it separate from raw meat.
Vegetables
Jamie- Vegetables. What counts as a cup of vegetables? In general, 1 cup of raw or cooked vegetables or vegetable juice, or 2 cups of raw leafy greens can be considered as 1 cup from the vegetable group. The chart lists specific amounts count as 1 cup of vegetables (in some cases equivalents for ½ cup are also shown) towards your recommended intake: Why is it important to eat vegetables?Eating vegetables provides health benefits — people who eat more fruits and vegetables as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Vegetables provide nutrients vital for health and maintenance of your body. For the best nutritional value:Select vegetables with more potassium often, such as sweetpotatoes, white potatoes, white beans, tomato products (paste, sauce, and juice), beet greens, soybeans, lima beans, winter squash, spinach, lentils, kidney beans, and split peas.
Nicole-What's in the vegetable group?--All Veggies and 100% Vegetable juice would be countable as a memeber of the vegetable group. Your vegetables may be raw or cooked. They can be whole, mashed or cut up. They can even be fresh, frozen, canned or dried. Vegetables are organized into 5 subgroups based on their nutrients. The subgroups are:--Dark Green Vegetables, Orange Vegetables, Dry Beans and Peas, Starchy Vegetables and Other Vegetables. How much is needed?--
The amount of veggies needed all depends on your level of physical activity, age and sex.
Children:
*Ages 2-3 should consume about a cup.*4-8 should get about 1 1/2.
Girls:*Ages 9-13 should have about 2 cups.*14-18 2 1/2 cups.
Boys:*Ages 9-13 should have 2 1/2 cups.*14-18 about 3 cups.
Women:*Ages 19-30 years old should have about 2 1/2 cups.*Ages 31-50 should also have about 2 1/2 cups.*51 and older should only consume about 2 cups.
Men:*Ages 19-30 should have about 3 cups.*Ages 31-50 should also have about 3 cups.*51 and older should only consume about 2 1/2 cups.
These approximations are all based on indiviaduals who get less than 30 minutes of exercise per day. Those are more physically active may be able to consume more than suggested above without exceeding calorie needs

Cholecalciferol is a vitamin that can help with the absorption of calcium from the stomach and to help with the functioning of calcium throughout your body. Cholecalciferol helps people who have low calcium levels or to prevent it from happening. Chloecalciferol can also prevent osteoporosis. If you have kidney problems, heart disease, or circulation problems then you should not take this vitamin. It has yet to be found out if over usage of this product will hurt an unborn child. When taking this pill you should drink a full glass of water. You should NEVER crush up this pill and take it. You should take this pill as directed by your doctor or read the directions. Vegetables
Parsnip was originally used for acne, asthma, cataracts, hey fever, skin problems, weakness, arthritis, bladder, eyes, liver, ulcers, and weight loss. This vegetable has a few good sources. Some of the sources include, chlorine, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, potassium, and vitamin C. Parsnip is a sweet tasting vegetable. When buying parsnip look for creamy parsnips with good size. It is good to mix with other vegetables to tone down its strong taste. Parsnip also add a good taste when juicing. Three normally found vitamins in Parsnip are Vitamin C, Niacan, and Pantothenic Acid.
Radishes were originally used for asthma, lung, asthma, thyroid, skin, and Eczema problems. This vegetable has a good source of iron, sodium, magnesium, vitamin C, and potassium. When buying radishes pick nice and red ones. If one you buy has green on the top then cut it off to make sure it still has its nutrients. It is important that radishes and radish sprouts are mixed with other vegetables because they have a strong taste. You should also only use small amounts. Seeing how they have a strong taste it is nice to mix them with apple juice or other juices. The three most commonly found vitamins in radishes are, Vitamin C, Niacan, and Pentatonic Acid.

Today in class we set up our own blog and wiki accounts. To set up the wiki account we went to the website www.wnesulb.org and put in our user names and set up the account. The second thing we did was set up our own blogs. To do this we went to the website http://www.blogger.com/start. We had to create an account by using our e-mail address and set a password. Once we got in we picked a template and added our blogs by creating new blogs. We posted 5 blogs today that we will use throughout the year to put our work in. Over all this process was pretty easy for me and I didn't have any difficulties.

Today in class we watched a few videos that all had to do with juicing. The first video had 5 basic rules to juicing. The first was that fruit and veggies had to be washed unless they were organic. The second rule was that with apples you had to wash them, but you could keep the skin and had to remove the seeds. Rule number 3 was to scrub carrots, but that you could keep the skin and had to remove the greens. The fourth rule was don't scrub citrus but to remove the peels. The final rule was to scrub celery and that you could keep both the skin and leaves.
The second video was on the Juicer Fountain Elite. In the commercial it said that it was easy to use and clean. This juicer is suppose to be the fastest juicer and the most efficient. The best part is that it has titanium plated cutting disks.
The third video was for the Jacklalanne Power Juicer. This juicer was suppose to be extremely quite and had a high output motor. This juicer had surgical steel blades.
The final video was of a very lame juicer, but the commercial showed how people try and target certain consumers into buying the product. This product seemed to target elderly and over weight people. However, it caught the attention of young children by giving away a free hippo.

Today in class we discussed how people need to do their work and not fall behind. We looked at different peoples blogs to show how people are doing good and how others not. Afterwards we were shown how to set up a delicious account. On delicious you can have your own profile where you can set your favorites. When setting up your favorites you can use it on any computer and also they have tabs. Tabs are easy way to find information your researching. Then we were told how to set up a flicker account. On this account you can find pictures that you can use on your blogs to decorate your page.

Today in class we learned that it is very important to not put offensive pictures onto your blog. We also went over how to find what amount of each food group you should eat a day. We did this my going to the website www.mypryamid.gov . We learned that different people can eat different amounts of calories a day. Then we learned what food group each group would have to write a report on.

Today in class Mr. Cohun showed us how to use the juicer. We also all had a sample of apple juice that Mr. Cohun made. After experimenting with the juicer, fellow classmates started to share their projects with the class. Gabe talked to the class about vitamin D, ginger, garlic, and peaches. After him, Kiya only talked about Vitamin B-5 because she didn't have all her projects finished. Finally Nicole ended with talking about Vitamin B-6 , but she didn't get a chance to finish because we ran out of time.

Today in class Mr. Cohun allowed us all to go to the computer lab to work on our labs. He did this so everybody could be passing for progress reports. In class today I posted everybody's projects from the class into my shared projects part of my blog. As of today my blog should be all updated.

Today in class we had Ricky from Planned Parenthood in Brattleboro come into class to talk about sexually transmitted infections (STI). He discussed with us the seven most commonly founded STIs in teenagers. The seven where chlamydia, gonerea, syphilis, HIV/AIDs, genital herpes, genital warts, and pubic lice (crabs). He then went into specifics about how you get these infections and what the effects of them are. Ricky told us if we were to choose what STI to get then the best one would be pubic lice. We are going to have Ricky again on Thursday to discuss contraceptives.
September 27, 2007
Today in class Ricky came back to discuss contraceptives. We discussed all the forms of birth control, spermicides, women's condoms, and male condoms. He then once again reminded us that the best way to not get pregnant and to not get any STIs was abstinence. If you're not going to choose abstinence then birth control is 99% effective, and male condoms are 98% effective. Ricky also explained to us that we don't have to be 18 years of age to go to Plan Parenthood to get any medications that we might need. That is a very misunderstood thing that teenagers think they have to have there parent but doesn't dare ask them.

First in class we were suppose to have juice, but the person didn't bring in the right ingredients. So Mr. Cohun kindly told us that we need to remember to have all our supplies and to be prepared. After that we started to share our own products on our vitamins. We didn't have a whole bunch of time to go over them though.
October 3rd, 2007
Today in class Gabe was suppose to do his juicing project, but we could not get the food processor to work so he could not do his project. Mr. Cohun then stressed the fact again that students need to come in a few days before to make sure they know what they need to do before the class of their juicing project. After that we talked about the government and health care and weather or not they should have to provide certain things to families.
October 5th, 2007.
Today in class Mr. Cohun wasn't there so we had a substitute. We watched a movie that was about decision making. The movie was suppose to help us want to make good decisions for ourselves and not bad ones. The speaker, Michael Pretchard, spoke about three main components in decision making. They were vision, intuitive, and perspective. He believed those were three very important parts in making either good or bad decisions. Michael believed that at any point in ones life they can change themselves if they really want to.

Today in class we started a unit on testicular and cervical cancer. We have only begun with the testicular part. We went onto a website, and Mr. Cohun asked us some questions to do with testicular cancer. The questions had to do with how common is it, do they know what causes it, and who is most likely to get it. Only 1-2% of men in the U.S get testicular cancer a year. They do not yet know what the cause of it is. Testicular cancer is more commonly found in younger man, and they have never had a case of testicular cancer of a man over the age of 75.

Today in class we went to the computer lab to work on a new project. The project was on Tobacco. I was assigned nicotine and nicotine withdrawal. In the computer lab I did my research, and then put it into my blog.
October 15th, 2007
In class today we continued the discussion with testicular cancer. Today we discussed how the symptoms are usually painless. In most cases there is just swelling or lumps, and it is very uncommon to have pain or enlargement. For men to check if they have testicular cancer though they should do annual checks themselves for lumps.

I was not present in class today because I was taking the PSAT's.
October 23rd, 2007
Today in class we played black jack. The thing was that we played with health cards that dealt with tobacco. If we lost, then we had to right down the facts on the cards. At the end whoever one the most got to keep the deck of cards.
October 25th, 2007
Today in class we talked about our midterm. It is going to be a game of jeopardy on all the topics we have learned about so far in the year. We will be put into groups for this activity. After that we began our tobacco unit. Gabe and I were the only two to go today.
October 29,th 2007
At the start of class I did my juicing presentations. I made fruit punch for the class. In the juice there were strawberries, apples, and an orange. After I was completed with my juicing project we continued with the presentations on the tobacco unit.
October 31st, 2007
Today in class Taylor did his juicing project. His juice consisted of grapes and oranges. Once he completed his juicing project we went through slides that dealt with tobacco. The slides showed us the effects of tobacco on the body. The presentation had pictures which compared healthy body parts to those of people who smoke. It was disgusting to see how bad smoking really is for you. After we were done with the presentations, we started to play jeopardy;however, there wasn't much time so we have to continue the game on Monday.
November 2nd, 2007
Today in class we had a subsitute. We went to the computer lab and worked on our Wiki assignment. We read about addiction and then posted responses into the forum. Some of the things we read about were the symptoms, myths, the damage it causes, ect. If we had time after we were done we were allowed to work on our blogs to make sure they were all set for the end of the quarter.
November 6th, 2007
Today in class we began to discuss the answers to the questions we had to post on the Wiki. However, only CJ and I did the work so we did all the sharing. The questions were related to addiction. The rest of the class was suppose to complete the questions for homework.
November 8th,
We finished up the going over the answers to the questions on the Wiki website. Still not very many people did the homework. Mr. Cohun however gave everyone one last chance to do the work.
November 12th, 2007
Today in class we began watching a movie. It was called 28 Days. The movie is about a girl who is sent to rehab, and her journey of overcomming her addiction. The movie is beginning to show the difficult part of rehab.
November 14th, 2007
To start class off today Gabe made us a juice. It was pretty good, and then we finished watching the movie 28 Days. The movie was very good. It was about this girl name Gwen who was sent to rehab. She was sent to rehab after she crashed her car into a house. The movie showed her struggles throughout rehab. The movie did a very good job showing how difficult is it to overcome addiction. Gwen was going to start up on drugs again, but decided not to. It also showed how people deal with their withdrawl differently. Some people ate candy, and others played games. Gwen's roomate cut herself, which eventually led to her suicide. The movie overall showed how if you want to get help and stop your addiction you can as long as you are determined to over come your addiction. I thought the movie was very good, and I enjoyed watching it.
