Reflective Writes

September 4th, 2007
Today in class we set up our own blog and wiki accounts. To set up the wiki account we went to the website www.wnesulb.org and put in our user names and set up the account. The second thing we did was set up our own blogs. To do this we went to the website http://www.blogger.com/start. We had to create an account by using our e-mail address and set a password. Once we got in we picked a template and added our blogs by creating new blogs. We posted 5 blogs today that we will use throughout the year to put our work in. Over all this process was pretty easy for me and I didn't have any difficulties.

What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a health lifestyle?

Today in class we watched a few videos that all had to do with juicing. The first video had 5 basic rules to juicing. The first was that fruit and veggies had to be washed unless they were organic. The second rule was that with apples you had to wash them, but you could keep the skin and had to remove the seeds. Rule number 3 was to scrub carrots, but that you could keep the skin and had to remove the greens. The fourth rule was don't scrub citrus but to remove the peels. The final rule was to scrub celery and that you could keep both the skin and leaves.
The second video was on the Juicer Fountain Elite. In the commercial it said that it was easy to use and clean. This juicer is suppose to be the fastest juicer and the most efficient. The best part is that it has titanium plated cutting disks.
The third video was for the Jacklalanne Power Juicer. This juicer was suppose to be extremely quite and had a high output motor. This juicer had surgical steel blades.
The final video was of a very lame juicer, but the commercial showed how people try and target certain consumers into buying the product. This product seemed to target elderly and over weight people. However, it caught the attention of young children by giving away a free hippo.

Today in class we discussed how people need to do their work and not fall behind. We looked at different peoples blogs to show how people are doing good and how others not. Afterwards we were shown how to set up a delicious account. On delicious you can have your own profile where you can set your favorites. When setting up your favorites you can use it on any computer and also they have tabs. Tabs are easy way to find information your researching. Then we were told how to set up a flicker account. On this account you can find pictures that you can use on your blogs to decorate your page.

Today in class we learned that it is very important to not put offensive pictures onto your blog. We also went over how to find what amount of each food group you should eat a day. We did this my going to the website www.mypryamid.gov . We learned that different people can eat different amounts of calories a day. Then we learned what food group each group would have to write a report on.

Today in class Mr. Cohun showed us how to use the juicer. We also all had a sample of apple juice that Mr. Cohun made. After experimenting with the juicer, fellow classmates started to share their projects with the class. Gabe talked to the class about vitamin D, ginger, garlic, and peaches. After him, Kiya only talked about Vitamin B-5 because she didn't have all her projects finished. Finally Nicole ended with talking about Vitamin B-6 , but she didn't get a chance to finish because we ran out of time.

September 21st, 2007
Today in class Mr. Cohun allowed us all to go to the computer lab to work on our labs. He did this so everybody could be passing for progress reports. In class today I posted everybody's projects from the class into my shared projects part of my blog. As of today my blog should be all updated.

Today in class we had Ricky from Planned Parenthood in Brattleboro come into class to talk about sexually transmitted infections (STI). He discussed with us the seven most commonly founded STIs in teenagers. The seven where chlamydia, gonerea, syphilis, HIV/AIDs, genital herpes, genital warts, and pubic lice (crabs). He then went into specifics about how you get these infections and what the effects of them are. Ricky told us if we were to choose what STI to get then the best one would be pubic lice. We are going to have Ricky again on Thursday to discuss contraceptives.

September 27, 2007
Today in class Ricky came back to discuss contraceptives. We discussed all the forms of birth control, spermicides, women's condoms, and male condoms. He then once again reminded us that the best way to not get pregnant and to not get any STIs was abstinence. If you're not going to choose abstinence then birth control is 99% effective, and male condoms are 98% effective. Ricky also explained to us that we don't have to be 18 years of age to go to Plan Parenthood to get any medications that we might need. That is a very misunderstood thing that teenagers think they have to have there parent but doesn't dare ask them.

October 1st, 2007
First in class we were suppose to have juice, but the person didn't bring in the right ingredients. So Mr. Cohun kindly told us that we need to remember to have all our supplies and to be prepared. After that we started to share our own products on our vitamins. We didn't have a whole bunch of time to go over them though.

October 3rd, 2007
Today in class Gabe was suppose to do his juicing project, but we could not get the food processor to work so he could not do his project. Mr. Cohun then stressed the fact again that students need to come in a few days before to make sure they know what they need to do before the class of their juicing project. After that we talked about the government and health care and weather or not they should have to provide certain things to families.

October 5th, 2007.
Today in class Mr. Cohun wasn't there so we had a substitute. We watched a movie that was about decision making. The movie was suppose to help us want to make good decisions for ourselves and not bad ones. The speaker, Michael Pretchard, spoke about three main components in decision making. They were vision, intuitive, and perspective. He believed those were three very important parts in making either good or bad decisions. Michael believed that at any point in ones life they can change themselves if they really want to.

October 9th, 2007
Today in class we started a unit on testicular and cervical cancer. We have only begun with the testicular part. We went onto a website, and Mr. Cohun asked us some questions to do with testicular cancer. The questions had to do with how common is it, do they know what causes it, and who is most likely to get it. Only 1-2% of men in the U.S get testicular cancer a year. They do not yet know what the cause of it is. Testicular cancer is more commonly found in younger man, and they have never had a case of testicular cancer of a man over the age of 75.

October 11th, 2007
Today in class we went to the computer lab to work on a new project. The project was on Tobacco. I was assigned nicotine and nicotine withdrawal. In the computer lab I did my research, and then put it into my blog.

October 15th, 2007
In class today we continued the discussion with testicular cancer. Today we discussed how the symptoms are usually painless. In most cases there is just swelling or lumps, and it is very uncommon to have pain or enlargement. For men to check if they have testicular cancer though they should do annual checks themselves for lumps.

October 17th, 2007
I was not present in class today because I was taking the PSAT's.

October 23rd, 2007
Today in class we played black jack. The thing was that we played with health cards that dealt with tobacco. If we lost, then we had to right down the facts on the cards. At the end whoever one the most got to keep the deck of cards.

October 25th, 2007

Today in class we talked about our midterm. It is going to be a game of jeopardy on all the topics we have learned about so far in the year. We will be put into groups for this activity. After that we began our tobacco unit. Gabe and I were the only two to go today.

October 29,th 2007

At the start of class I did my juicing presentations. I made fruit punch for the class. In the juice there were strawberries, apples, and an orange. After I was completed with my juicing project we continued with the presentations on the tobacco unit.

October 31st, 2007

Today in class Taylor did his juicing project. His juice consisted of grapes and oranges. Once he completed his juicing project we went through slides that dealt with tobacco. The slides showed us the effects of tobacco on the body. The presentation had pictures which compared healthy body parts to those of people who smoke. It was disgusting to see how bad smoking really is for you. After we were done with the presentations, we started to play jeopardy;however, there wasn't much time so we have to continue the game on Monday.

November 2nd, 2007

Today in class we had a subsitute. We went to the computer lab and worked on our Wiki assignment. We read about addiction and then posted responses into the forum. Some of the things we read about were the symptoms, myths, the damage it causes, ect. If we had time after we were done we were allowed to work on our blogs to make sure they were all set for the end of the quarter.

November 6th, 2007

Today in class we began to discuss the answers to the questions we had to post on the Wiki. However, only CJ and I did the work so we did all the sharing. The questions were related to addiction. The rest of the class was suppose to complete the questions for homework.

November 8th,

We finished up the going over the answers to the questions on the Wiki website. Still not very many people did the homework. Mr. Cohun however gave everyone one last chance to do the work.

November 12th, 2007

Today in class we began watching a movie. It was called 28 Days. The movie is about a girl who is sent to rehab, and her journey of overcomming her addiction. The movie is beginning to show the difficult part of rehab.

November 14th, 2007

To start class off today Gabe made us a juice. It was pretty good, and then we finished watching the movie 28 Days. The movie was very good. It was about this girl name Gwen who was sent to rehab. She was sent to rehab after she crashed her car into a house. The movie showed her struggles throughout rehab. The movie did a very good job showing how difficult is it to overcome addiction. Gwen was going to start up on drugs again, but decided not to. It also showed how people deal with their withdrawl differently. Some people ate candy, and others played games. Gwen's roomate cut herself, which eventually led to her suicide. The movie overall showed how if you want to get help and stop your addiction you can as long as you are determined to over come your addiction. I thought the movie was very good, and I enjoyed watching it.
